One of the Dark-Spored Mushrooms. These Shaggy Mane mushrooms were growing in my neighbors yard.

A description of them from the Lone Pine Field Guide entitled "Mushrooms of Ontario and Eastern Canada" by George Barron. Also identified as Coprinus comatus, the Shaggy Mane mushrooms have caps that are 5 - 15 cm across, conical to bell-shaped, dry, and covered with brown or blackish, recurved scales. Gills are free, crowded, and white to beige, becoming black and dissolving into a black fluid. Stalks are up to 15 cm tall by 2 cm wide, smooth, and hollow. Ring is white and movable. Spoor print is black. Widespread and common, Shaggy Mane fruits in grass and is associated with disturbed sites. And it is edible.

I choose not to try it.
