Celebrating 60 years after the end of WWII

Today we attended an event in St. Paul, Minnesota relative to the end of WWII. The State Historical Society is sponsoring a program called "Minnesota's Greatest Generation" to capture the memories and stories of those involved in the war effort in the field, at home and the post war years. These young ladys, representating the Andrews Sisters, entertained us with a few numbers.

After the outdoor presentation, the crowd adjourned to a hall where 4 people, who experienced some aspect of the war, told a few minutes of their story and where they were on August 14th. 60 years ago when the news of the war ending flashed around the world. It was a very emotional experience.

August 14 seems to have been emotional. For us, August 15, 1947 is the year we gained our independence from the Brits. Mon 15-Aug-2005 09:17

Sixty-five years from now, Gulf War veterans will be talking about today. Unfortunately, World War II was the last war that we can still be "proud" of here in the U.S. Tue 16-Aug-2005 14:53

A big green worm

I drained the liquid form a can of kidney beans on this moss covered stump. About 30 minutes later when I went by it again, here was this big green worm going after the liquid. He was big, 2 inches long by 3/8 inch in diameter and quick. When I coaxed him out of the moss, he quickly turned into this U shape. He had very unique markings and notice the strange hook on the tail.

wow, thats one scary worm Wed 10-Aug-2005 09:50

i think that worm is a caterpiallar of a swarmer, i searched in my caterpallar-book, in Europe the Sphinx ligustri has a similar caterpillar. Mon 22-Aug-2005 20:45

House Finch nest

5 eggs in the nest
2 chicks hatched and I am hungry
3 chicks made it
View all 6 photos...
I bought my wife a flower basket for our front porch in early May. Within a day, a pair of House Finchs built a nest in the basket and laid 5 eggs. These 5 birds grew up and flew away in mid June. We took the basket down and within a day, the Finchs began building thhis nest on top of the reath hanging on the wall of our porch. Only 3 of the eggs of the second group hatched and eventually flew away. It was interesting watching the development of these little birds.

great pics...I had a pair of carolina wrens nesting in a window well outside my computer room...I could watch but there was no was to get pics without disturbing them Sun 7-Aug-2005 11:15

These grow on bushes from 4 to 10 feet high. I believe the bears love them. This year there are lots of them while others years there are very few.

Outhouse spiders

When visiting the northwoods, one does not always have indoor plumbing facilities. There were 4 of these spiders in one outhouse. Each one was about 1 1/2 inch in diameter and they seemed to have their own territory or corner of the world as one might say.
