I came across these small flowers one day on a walk in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Spring in nice there in early February. I wish I knew the names of them. The flowers in V were less than an eighth of an inch in diameter. The ones in U T and S were not much bigger.

Spectacular! Love # 1 Fri 26-Mar-2004 04:08

Hi Don. Thanks for stopping by my dragonfly series and leaving a comment. You've got some pretty nice pictures here on your page and you seem to get around the country a bit too. I'll be back!

If I'm not mistaken, the flower in photo Z is a poppy, the California State Flower. Not sure about the rest, but they are familiar since I spent over 40 years in CA, a lot of them hiking the Sierra Nevada.

Rocks are so fascinating. When I was a kid we had these large, flat, dark gray rocks (limestone?) that served as a walkway...they had fossilized imprints on them and I would sit and look at them...amazed at the detail and imaging the history...yea, yea, it doesn't take much to amuse me Thu 25-Mar-2004 05:10

Grinding Holes

Water hole

Citizens of yesterday are said to have ground acrons in holes like these. I wish I could have wittnessed the activity and tasted the fruits of it.

I counted 43 holes in this site. Some were 6 to 7 inches in diameter by 10 inches deep. Others were just a small depression in the granite.

wow! That is sooo neat Tue 23-Mar-2004 12:39

Granite Basins

Wet one
Dry one
Grass plus
View all 6 photos...
Treking around granite outcrops, one comes upon small depressions in the rock. Some of these hold water, others are filled with dirt and in some cases grass or other plants, some are dry depending upon the last rain fall.
Under ideal conditions, water finds a small depression and dissolves a bit of the stone. Over thousands of years, more stone is dissolved until we walk along and see it.
This set shows a variety of these depressions.

All our depressions are dry in central SD...

Nice set...

Yesterday's views

Winter

View all 6 photos...
The last photo, called "Fast - track", involves a frozen river in the north country upon which snow mobiles race to and fro. High above the winter sceen is a jet full of people likely on their way to Japan over the northern route.

At the moment of the photo, all is quiet where I stand.

Excellent set...
Where abouts are you located in the US.all our snow is gone in SDak...thankfully...

Your photos are amazing! You have a wonderful talent of capturing the things in nature that we think are simple but turn out to be wonderfully complex, yet simple in their own right, photographs! Brilliant!!! Sun 18-Apr-2004 05:05
