CA Monster
My wife and I went for a walk in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains when we came upon this little monster. About 3 inches long, he was concerned about our intrusion into his world. He sat still for a couple of minutes while I got a couple of pics of him.

Merry Christmas

This tree looks much better in person. The camera and I came up short on capturing the beauty of this tree in our back yard.

Ice mover

Make ice in February 1932.
Once the blocks of ice were cut free, they were pulled towards shore where a conveyor lifted them out of the water to a waiting wagon for transportation to the ice house.

Ice Saw
Before there were modern refrigerators, one had to cut and store ice during the winter to enjoy a cool drink during the summer. My Mother took this picture of a man making cuts in the ice on the Mill Pond northwest of Muscoda, Wisconsin in February 1932. I would guess the ice would be 6 to 10 inches thick. After cutting it into blocks that were perhaps 10 by 20 inches, they were pulled from the water, setting the stage for another photo in a day or two.

Sharks Tooth
While traveling along the GraniteRoad the other day, I came upon a sharks tooks. I found this tooth in north-eastern South Dakota on top of the Pre-Cambrian rocks in what is known as the Cretaceous Shales. Based on the geologic record, this shark lived in a shallow sea about 65 to 70 million years ago. The top portion of the tooth is brokne off but otherwise it looks pretty good for being around that long. The tooth tapers form a point on the bottom to about 1/8 inch thick just below the bone portion on top. That portion of the tooth is about 3/8 of an inch long.

Happy Thanksgiving
We hope you have a great Thanksgiving with your family this week. We plan to celebrate on Saturday with Jenny & family and Jean’s brother and his wife form Babbitt. Tomorrow we are going to a local restaurant for their annul buffet.
I took this picture in the woods of Northern Minnesota a year or so ago. I though it was a bit unique with the brown fern plant leaf wrapped around this tiny tree that is starting to grow towards the light. I believe the tree is a Balsam Fir Tree.
