Doves visiting the front of our house!

A pair of Doves
Resting
Necking

RE #2: I didn't find it sad that there was nobody left to remember that particular person. That's just the way it was. And even in my own family, the only things that have ever been left are some stuff and our memories; any money doesn't really mean much to me: it's worth less than the stuff and the memories. My wife and I spent the night at a surprise party for a friend who is turning 40. Weird to think that it is just about the halfway point of her life, even though to us she still seems so young and full of life -- like ourselves. I enjoyed many glasses of merlot, speaking of another glass of wine. We danced till soaked with sweat, and I shot many fotos so that we and they could remember the night. Sun 23-Apr-2006 04:00

CA Monster

My wife and I went for a walk in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains when we came upon this little monster. About 3 inches long, he was concerned about our intrusion into his world. He sat still for a couple of minutes while I got a couple of pics of him.

I, too, have camped in the Sierra Nevada mountains, and wished I could have stayed. In a way, I could have. We camped in the off-season, and at the campground we chose there was a guy who was running a sluice box, panning for gold. We had a long chat and shared beers by the campfire. He offered us to run his sluice box for the winter and keep a portion of the take, but we couldn't, as we would have to go AWOL to stay there. Thu 6-Apr-2006 19:54

Merry Christmas

This tree looks much better in person. The camera and I came up short on capturing the beauty of this tree in our back yard.

Hey, Don. Good to hear back from you. I have a small eBay habit myself. I go to estate sales and garage sales to buy stuff -- and I search garage rafters for stuff the sale managers might have missed, which has turned out well a few times -- and then sell things here and there on eBay. I usually make from 5 to 20 times what I paid for the items. I can see how doing it full-time could be very lucrative. I wish I could tell you my latest score, but it was so outrageous that it felt like I was cheating. I'm serious -- it was amazing! Well, good luck on your eBay'ing and I'll keep checking back for updates. Sat 4-Mar-2006 03:42

Ice mover

Make ice in February 1932.

Once the blocks of ice were cut free, they were pulled towards shore where a conveyor lifted them out of the water to a waiting wagon for transportation to the ice house.

these are great shots don Sun 4-Dec-2005 08:19

Ice Saw

Before there were modern refrigerators, one had to cut and store ice during the winter to enjoy a cool drink during the summer. My Mother took this picture of a man making cuts in the ice on the Mill Pond northwest of Muscoda, Wisconsin in February 1932. I would guess the ice would be 6 to 10 inches thick. After cutting it into blocks that were perhaps 10 by 20 inches, they were pulled from the water, setting the stage for another photo in a day or two.

thats a grand foto don, one to be proud of Thu 1-Dec-2005 07:46

Sharks Tooth

While traveling along the GraniteRoad the other day, I came upon a sharks tooks. I found this tooth in north-eastern South Dakota on top of the Pre-Cambrian rocks in what is known as the Cretaceous Shales. Based on the geologic record, this shark lived in a shallow sea about 65 to 70 million years ago. The top portion of the tooth is brokne off but otherwise it looks pretty good for being around that long. The tooth tapers form a point on the bottom to about 1/8 inch thick just below the bone portion on top. That portion of the tooth is about 3/8 of an inch long.

Happy Thanksgiving

We hope you have a great Thanksgiving with your family this week. We plan to celebrate on Saturday with Jenny & family and Jean’s brother and his wife form Babbitt. Tomorrow we are going to a local restaurant for their annul buffet.

I took this picture in the woods of Northern Minnesota a year or so ago. I though it was a bit unique with the brown fern plant leaf wrapped around this tiny tree that is starting to grow towards the light. I believe the tree is a Balsam Fir Tree.
