Mural in Ely Minnesota
This mural was painted by Bill Defenbaugh who is 45 years old and lives in Ely. Ely was a mining town 50 to 100 years ago. Natural iron ore was mined on the north side of town where today there exists a large lake. The steam locomotive pulled train loads of ore from this mine for many years. For more information about this artist and Ely, go to the Ely, MN web site, scroll down to "Ely Greenstone Public Art" and open the page for Bill Defenbaugh.
One of the million stories about this town involved the Fourth of July fireworks. When the mine operated, a lot of wood was used as timbers to shore up the underground tunnels. As these began to rot, they were replaced and old timbers were hauled to the surface where they were tossed over the edge of the subsidence pit and formed a hugh pile. After the mine closed and perhaps before as well, the city would shoot off the fireworks over this large pit. There were lots of good viewing points and what went into the open hole never came out. About 30 years ago one forth of July, some of the fire works landed in this old timber pile and started in on fire. With all the water in northern MN, there was not enough to put out the fire and it burned for a couple of years before it ran out of fuel. This ended the fireworks display over the old pit for many years. Today the water has risen to a point where the remaining timbers are under water and I believe the fireworks are again shot off over the old mining pit/lake..

Virginia Bluebells
When I grew up, these flowers grew in the pasture near the river in the spring. Last weekend I found one in a garden in Babbitt, MN.
Also called Lungwort, Virginia Cowslip or Hokoh Bluebells; Virginai Bluebells is a wonderful, pale blue, spring wildflower found in the southeastern portion of Minnesota. Its flower buds begin pink but turn to light blue as flowers bloom, and its semi-succulent leaves have deep veins. A northern species (M. paniculata) grows along the North Shore of Lake Superior and has pointed leaves that are covered with fine haris.

Feather Dog
As I left for work this morning, the sun was up and bright. To the northeast there was a thin cloud that sort of looked like a feather. The sun created a bright spot at the appropriate location.

Oh no, not another cold morning

These pics are not what I expected to bring back and you likely were not expecting them either. We awoke on May 1st. to a blanket of snow covering the landscape. It did not last long but was pretty in it's own way. Sounds like this weekend will be much better in St. Cloud as least.
It snowed every day this past week in the northwoods.

These are only about an inch high and very delicate. Don't know the name but they were interesting. I think they are some sort of moss.
