Tamarack tree cones

This tree is a deciduous conifer meaning that it looses it's needles each fall. Just before they fall, the needles turn a beautiful golden color. A thick stand of Tamaracks really stand out against the dark green Balsams that often grow in the same areas. These Tamarack cones are the female version. The male cones are yellow and grow on the same tree. I did not notice any on this tree. When the new needles emerge in the spring, ther are a beautiful pastel green in color.

Have flowers will travel

These little yellow flowers have been in my wife's family for many years. Her mother originally grew them in Avoca, Wisconsin when we took a few plants to Babbitt, Minnesota. We took them along when we moved to St. Cloud and have moved 3 times since we got here. The flowers are about the size of a quarter on stems about 30 inches high. They are a beautiful spring flower.

Nice! I should plant my whole front yard with these! Tue 31-May-2005 14:34

Little blue flowers

I found these by an old homestead in the woods. In one book it looks to be called Ground Ivy but is not an Ivy but a Eurasian import of the Mint family. Other names are Creeping Charley and Gill-over-the-ground. Often found in lawns and is very agressive. Known as a weed in most circles.
